Saltwater Cowboys swim the Ponies from Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island. The swim generally takes place between 7am and 1pm during “slack-tide”. The auction helps control the size of the herd and raises funds for the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company. The Fire Company uses some of the proceeds to provide veterinary care for the ponies.
